Furukatsu Tea Farm and Tea Factory are located in Kyoto's Yamashiro, "Mountain Castle," region. Emperor Kanmu, famous for laying out the city of Kyoto, built his palace first in beautiful Yamashiro before moving it north towards the present heart of the city of Kyoto in the 8th century.

The ancestor of the Furukatsu farm, Mr. Matazaemon began the Furukatsu farm in 1899. The farm cultivates their tea under a unique form of shade structure that makes rich matcha called "ooi shita cha."  They pick the leaves by hand, caring deeply about traditional practice.
