The Higuchi Tea Farm brings us four distinct varieties from their tea farm located in the Asamiya matcha producing region of Shiga prefecture directly adjacent to the Wazuka matcha region of Kyoto prefecture.  The Asamiya region was the first to begin cultivation of matcha in the 9th century when the monks Saicho, Kukai, and Eichu brought back the tea from China.

Kukai, who founded the esoteric Shingon sect of Buddhism in Japan is the famed writer of the "Iroha" poem or "poem of colors" by which all traditional Japanese dictionaries are organized because it uses every sound in the Japanese language only once.
